DIY “BELIEVE” Sign

A few weeks ago I was on my way home from picking up my oldest bean from school and spotted loads of free mahogany wood by the side of the road.  It had been part of a deck, the gentleman explained to me as he kindly helped me pack the boards into the car.  He seemed glad it was going to be put to good use.

So, over the weekend I decided I’d try and hammer a few of those boards together to make a sign.  I lined up three boards and then cut a small piece of lumber in half to attach them.  6 nails later I was in business.  Next I taped off the edges and painted the inside white – creating a boarder around the sign (and the illusion of a frame). Like so:

I printed out the letters in “Elephant” font (one of my favorites for sign-making) at about size point 350.  Each letter fit to one page.  Then, I took my razor and sliced out the letters, making a stencil:

I placed the stencils over the wood and spaced the letters 2.8″ apart, making sure they were level and fit all the way across the board.

Finally, I took out my stenciling brush and some left over red paint from our front door (photos of that too coming soon!) and stenciled in each letter. Here’s a tip, quickly remove the paper after you stencil each letter to avoid any smudging.  After it dried, I tried it out on the mantle:

We’ll see where it ends up…perhaps the wall… who knows… that’s the fun part thought isn’t it?

Thanks for stopping in!  Hope you have a fantastic weekend.
