DIY Dining Room Rug

We’ve been spending a lot of time in our dining room for homeschooling these days and for what we like to call our special nights “out” for dinner. The room was an addition to the house and the floor tends to get chilly underfoot. I *somewhat reluctantly* decided we needed to add a rug to cozy things up a bit. Unfortunately (Sigh), rugs can be pricey – and I really didn’t want to get anything that I’d worry about ruining. Food + Art class + dirty toogies from wearing crocs = potential for disaster. How could I get something inexpensive but not sacrifice on style?

Off to good old Walmart.com I went. Much to my surprise, Loloi came out with an affordable line called, “Loloi II,” however,- the largest cottage-style option was a 3×5. Darn… I almost gave up on the idea until it hit me while making eggs later that morning. What if I sewed three together? Boom. DIY wheels were turning and there was no stopping me. The 3x5s were $14 at the time (they’ve since increased their pricing…ugh, how can they even do that? prices should only be allowed to go down amIright!?) Still, could I pull off a 5×9 for $45? (free ship!??) you bet I was going to give it a try!

I ordered three and couldn’t wait to get going. Sadly, one arrived a tiny bit smaller than the other two. I considered trying to sew them together anyway and just call it “perfectly imperfect” but the windowpane design of the rugs were unkind to the naked eye. Nope, all three of the rugs needed to line up properly to pull this off. So? I ordered another (now at the higher price, curse) and prayed that it would come in the right size. It did.

Now, how to tie these together…I’d recently added my own “tassels” to a neighboring rug in our living room and had plenty of twine left over from that. Done. I was simply going to tie them together from underneath and call it a day, but my husband planted the idea in my head about making the stitch itself stylish… “Like a baseball stitch,” he said to me. Shoot babe, I love that idea. I gave a few a try – and loved it. Yes it took me 100x longer, but I’m pretty happy with the result:

It gave the room just the right touch of cottage cozy I was hoping for and I’m not going to cringe if things get messy. (Pretty sure that I’ve already spied some neon orange marker down there.) 😉

Thank you for stopping in today! If you give this a try, let me know…I would love to see your own creation.

XO Kate
