Adding Texture to the Dining Room

After the tree was in place, dressed head to toe in lights and ornaments… all situated “reaaal nice”  we had a rainy day… and rainy days around here mean DIY.  I’d been dreaming about adding shingles to the dining room to add texture and well, why not do it when the tree is right in the way to make things difficult?  Yes… I’ll thank the glow from a successful football season for these crazy requests being carried out.

We bought 2 bundles of cedar shingles from Lowe’s ($8 each) for this project.  The Mr. used a nail gun and a razor to slice the shingles to fit together like pieces of a puzzle.

Here’s were we began:

And now layering the boards across on one side, then the next….which would have been SO much easier if the tree weren’t RIGHT.IN.THE.WAY.   (sorry babe!). Man he must really love me 😉

Once one row was done, he added another layer on top, and then another layer, and another until he reached the top.

To finish of the rough edges around the ceiling he added some trim found in the garage and voila:

It almost feels like a manger in here now.  I go back and fourth about staining or whitewashing the shingles to soften the look… but for now… we’re going raw. :-).

And just a few more angles because I love the way the window acts like a mirror at night… almost like we have two trees:

Hope you enjoyed this little addition to our dining area (turned tree room/manger).  Stay tuned for some more Christmas décor and inspiration this week!
