How I gave the kitchen shelves a taste of Fall

With football well underway and school starting this week, I thought I’d get into the spirit by giving the shelves a little taste of fall.  Remember how they used to be?IMG_8391

One of my favorite places to “shop” for things to display is right here in our own home.  Yep, you might be surprised what can be repurposed and given a whole new look by just changing its location.  Easy and free?  Sounds good to me ;-).

Now for the fun part.  I like to group items together, then take one out of the group, and place it somewhere else.   If you look in this picture below, there is a collection of brown and white ceramics:  Three on top and then one on the next shelf down.

It forces the eye to complete the grouping by bouncing it down to the next shelf.  Neat right?

I also like to decorate in triangles.  Things that are red/orange are strategically placed around the shelf creating a triangle. Same for things that are brown/wood tones, and yet again for grey/slate colored.  Like so:

These little tricks help the eye bounce all around the shelves, keeping it interesting and balanced.  🙂

It took some playing around and shifting things in and out before I found the right “mix.” I stand back, squint my eyes (think Christmas tree lights, finding the holes and filling them in) and sometimes even have to leave the room for a bit.  If something stands out right away when I come back, it’s got to move.

Anyone else decorate like this or have any fun tips they’d like to share?  Leave a comment below-I’d love to do a guest blog post!
