Adding Texture to the Kitchen Island

Last week I posted on instagram a few shots of a dark paint color (Sherwin Williams Slate Tile) on the kitchen island.  Well…. let’s just say, I use trial and error all the time when decorating our home.  This time? No different.  I painted a side… then another side… and then another… stepped back, slept on it, and finally came to terms that it just wasn’t right.  No harm done, and truth be told it was fun giving something compltely new a try.  Next up?  Texture.  I find, when color doesn’t fit the bill, texture often will.

I picked up a bunch of 1x3x8’s at Lowe’s, and stained them with classic gray stain by minwax on the “rough” side to accentuate the saw markings and natural knots.  Then, the Mister got out the saw and secured them in a barn “X” to the already beadboarded island.   I caulked the boards and softened the look with a coat of white milk paint.

Yes, a little character brought in with texture was just the ticket.  Now? It’s Thanksgiving day planning over here.  Stay tuned for some table setting fun.
