A New Use for Some Old Crates and a Stag

Since the weather has turned, we’ve brought the summer furniture inside for safe keeping.  At first I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do with all of the wood crates (more about these beauties here) we’d used as our outdoor seating.  Then I stumbled on a gorgeous pin (by Cherishedbliss.com) and queue the light bulb.

Turned the crates to their side, stacked them and bingo-winter storage for boots, mittens, hats… you name it. ;-).

BreezewaystorageDIYAnd can we just talk about how Walmart has stepped up it’s game?  Yep, those galvanized bins were under $8 each and, hold on to your seats, those Moscow mules? ALSO FROM WALMART!  $6.00.  Start your cars.

antlersandstorageHere’s another little tip – if you find a couple that are imperfect (and these most certainly were) ask the clerk if they can give you a discount… more than likely they will.  I brought these beauties home for $8 total.  Oh, Gigi would be so proud.  🙂

StorageDIYI also came home with a tube of black chalk paint, taped off a rectangle, and painted right on the wall.  Then, I took 4 old fence posts we found out in our backyard, stained them, sawed the tips and nailed them to the wall:

Well, I brought the kids with me to Target to get diapers…

…And, since we don’t get out much, we made it an event:  Toys for each kid, and this guy… who the kids named “Pumpkinie.”  We pushed him in the stroller (naturally the littlest wanted “out” as soon as she saw Sofia the first) and I went back and fourth on seriousness of actually bringing him home (him meaning the stag of course).  We finally hit the checkout counter and I got cold feet.  Pumpkinie was placed on the empty counter in the next aisle and we swiped the credit card.  My heart kinda sank.  Then as we were strolling out, my oldest said, “Mom, I kinda think he’s cute and he wants to come home with us.” Bless her sweet heart, I couldn’t have agreed more. We turned right around, grabbed the old stag and got back into the now really long line.  I didn’t matter… that little bugger was coming home with us.  And we’re so glad he did… he keeps us all smiling when we come through the door.

My sister, Kim, author and mastermind behind Health and Happiness Connection,  struck a chord with me on one of her posts this week when she asked,  “What’s a small choice that you can make today that will bring a little extra happiness into your daily life?” Well girl, this guy certainly is it. My oldest was proud as a peach that she “convinced” me to turn around and get him after all. The way her face lit up was worth more than anything money could buy…  And hey, he’s fun, whimsy, and he puts a smile on our faces… what more could a momma ask for. ;-). Thanks for stopping in!  Have a fantastic weekend.

  1. Hi Kate! 🙂
I saw that same stag at Target the other day and took a photo of him with my phone, because I have never seen anything like it before…I just LOVE it! I love the chalkboard wall and how you framed it, it’s the perfect spot for such a perfect plaid deer! 😉
Wal-Mart does have some really cute things lately. Love the metal bins, they look perfect in your crates and that is the perfect use for them for the winter.
    Beautiful!
Have a wonderful weekend friend! 🙂

  2. Thanks for the shout out, Kate!! I absolutely love Pumpkinie and think you guys made the right decision on going back for him 🙂 Tell M she made a great call!

  3. Hi there! I just found your blog because… well… that stag jumped in my cart… I could not leave him behind. He had me at hello. And I really really tried to convince myself I didn’t need him. Been getting rid or so much clutter and downsizing my closets etc… I debated how much I needed him and he seems to bring me such joy when I look at him… a plaid stag brings me joy… oh how silly. I haven’t found the right place for him yet so I googled him and found your blog… guess I’m not alone in my love of a plaid whimsey stag!! Marcy

    1. Hi Marcy!
Oh, I’m so glad the deer charmed you too. We are so glad that we ended up bringing him home. Puts a smile on our faces ever time we walk through the door… and that, my friend, was worth every penny. :0). Would love to see where you end up putting your sweet little guy. Do you have an Instagram account? Tag me @backtoblueberryhill if you do so I can find you 🙂

      Warmly,
      Kate
